A Modest Proposal

Comment 12th July 2010

In 1729, I published a proposal suggesting that the impoverished Irish could ameliorate their disastorous economic situation by selling their offspring to richer individuals, who might then eat them, thus providing cheap food.

You can see the detail of that proposal here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modest_Proposal

I would humbly suggest that this idea is no more radical a way of resolving the benefits crisis than some being proposed on this site, nor by the current government, and I wish to make clear that my original proposal was satirical in nature.  I fear that, in the 21st century, I am in danger of being taken seriously.

Why does this matter?

My idea is important because it reminds people that people who claim benefits are human beings.  Most are taxpayers, too.  And at the moment, with the current cuts, we are in danger of forgetting that.

My real proposal is that we treat benefit claimants like human beings.
