Abolish British Transport Police

Comment 7th July 2010

British Transport Police (BTP), whose sole function is to march up and down railway platforms, should be abolished and their officers absorbed into the regular constabulary.

Why does this matter?

Save money – BTP are currently paid for by a charge on all rail tickets.

BTP serve no useful purpose – other that to chew gum, chat-up barrier staff, chase trainspotters, stare at passengers and abuse Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

BTP are unwelcome in Scotland, where they are a foreign force under direct control of the Home Office.

No other EU country has a dedicated railway police force.
