Abolish the Privy Council

Comment 17th July 2010

Orders in Council are a way of effectively enacting legislation without bringing the matter before Parliament.  Successive Governments resist abolishing this remnant of the totalitarian monarchy of centuries ago, because while it is not used all that often, it is handy to legalise a measure which would never get through Parliament.

Why does this matter?

Orders in Council have no place in a true democracy.   They are the last bastion of dictatorship.
