Abolish the right of holding parish polls

Comment 6th July 2010

Voters have a little known right to force their Parish or Town Council to hold a poll on matters of interest in the local community, and all it requires is a few electors to oblige the council to hold such a poll.  This right should be abolished.

Why does this matter?

Parish polls are little more than vanity by special interest groups to promote their cause, they are expensive, the result has no legal status and cause untold disruption by closing schools to use as polling stations.  If the Government make good their plans to give district level councils the power to hold polls on matters of local interest that DO have legal status, then the largely irrelevant power to force parish and town councils to hold parish polls should be abolished.
