Abuses in UK slaughter-houses should carry severe penalties

Comment 6th July 2010

Following Animal Aid's shocking undercover investigation into current abuses in UK slaughter-houses, I suggest we need compulsory CCTV footage in all premises, proper licensing of all slaughter-men (with a minimum requisite for basic English so that commands and instructions from vets can be properly understood and problems quickly communicated), severe penalties for any abuses – and full veterinary supervision at all times.

Sheep being beaten to death, slaughtermen laughing while they repeatedly torture already terrified pigs with electric shock equipment, the failure to properly pre-stun just for the 'hell' of it – is completely unacceptable. This daily atrocity has to end.

As the wise Mahatma Gandhi said: "The state of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

Why does this matter?

Because animals are not inanimate 'stock,' 'products,' 'specimens' or commodities – they are living, breathing, highly sentient and fully conscious beings.

And they feel fear, pain and distress absolutely no less than we do.

Empathy is one of the greatest human virtues. Let's use it.
