Allow asylum-seekers to work after they’ve been here 6 months

Comment 11th July 2010

It seems that many asylum-seekers still wait an inordinate length of time for a decision on their application.  They should be allowed to work here while they wait – and while they go through the appeal process if that becomes necessary as I understand that many appeals are successful, ie initial refusals are found to be incorrectly decided.

Why does this matter?

Asylum seekers would then be paying taxes and therefore helping the economy. Also it would help them to cope with the problems they have left behind, often quite horrendous, as work often gives people a feeling of being useful.
