Allow Genuine Choice of Maternity Services in the NHS

Comment 17th August 2010

The Government often goes on about patient choice of services and how they are not making NHS spending cuts. So I was therefore surprised to learn that my local hospital has cancelled their tours of maternity and delivery facilities due to NHS spending cuts! How can you make an informed choice when this service has been cut?

Why does this matter?

The result is a genuine lack of choice for patients. It will also lead to increased anxiety in expectant mothers, leading to possible longer labours or more costly intervention as research has shown time and time again that women benefit from reassurance and familiar surroundings when giving birth.

It also demonstrates the inconsistencies in levels of service across the country. How can that be fair?
