Amend the Inquiries Act 2005

Comment 16th August 2010

The Inquiries Act 2005 was passed into law just before the general election held in 2005.  It has been the subject of severe criticism in that it handed too much power to Ministers to control many aspects of any inquiry set up under the Act.  The Act should now be reviewed so that the concept of an INDEPENDENT and PUBLIC Inquiry continues to truly exist in our country.

Why does this matter?

Inquiries are an important and essential way of getting at the truth of some complex matters which have caused considerable public concern.  Often there is the possibility of criticism of the way in which government has operated.  The 2005 Act gave Ministers too much say in the whole Inquiry process and this detracts from true independence which is essential to ensure public confidence in the process.
