Anonymity for those accused of rape or sexual assault until found guilty

1 Comment 1st July 2010

Anyone, men and women alike, who are accused of rape or sexual assault should have the same right to anonymity as those who have been raped. If they are found guilty then their names should be released to the media.

Why does this matter?

This is important because it will protect the small amount of innocent people who are accused every year of terrible sexual crimes they did not commit. It will protect these innocent people from having their names and reputations destroyed by those who falsely accuse them and prevent those in industries like teaching having their carers destroyed.

One Response to Anonymity for those accused of rape or sexual assault until found guilty

You make a valid point, however, I would raise the issue that the lack of anonymity enables the possibility that other potential victims may come forward. It’s certainly a tricky balancing act though!
