Bring back corporal punishment

6 Comments 10th May 2015

As there seems to no deterrent to minor criminal acts, as prison usually creates a martyr of anybody who receives a sentence. Bring back the CANE and use it for these types of crimes.

This seems old-fashioned but I never knew of anybody re-offending after receiving strokes from the cane.

Possibly introduce it’s use on a regular basis in prison (monthly), this would stop people from returning to prison. Do away with ASBOS and give the miscreants strokes with the cane- they will not be in such a hurry to re-offend.

Why does this matter?

Act as a deterrent to criminals and reduce the number being sent to prison

I don’t know what body of information you’re basing the exceptionally broad statements that ‘criminals get away with it/migrants do what they want’ on, but it sounds like you’re extrapolating from some sort of perceived personal injustice. You just sound like a a very hate-filled and intolerant person. So sad.

And for a ‘professor of criminal history’ your spelling sure is appalling. I call bullshit.

I had the slipper in class for constantly calling out.
i had been told and got called out to the front.
The teacher made a big joke about the whole thing, how bendy the size 9 green flash was.
And also how many times he could spin round on the spot as he cloted your arse!
As i went back to my chair arse stinging he was still joking about it. Clever teaching, he never had a go at people.
I never hated him for it, actually my favourite teacher.
It will never come back as it will seem excessive to this generation, I’m 51, my youngest is 4. I would welcome it back tomorrow. What are parents worried about?
It worked and you had more respect for people.
Kids are allowed too much rope now and its strangling the country.
Can’t remember the last time i smacked one of my kids, shouting LOUD works but some parents don’t give a toss. This shouldn’t happen in school, rules should be adhered to.

The cane never was the ultimate deterrent in schools. Proof? By law every school had to keep a punishment book in which the names of those punished were supposed to be recorded. Lots of these books remain; most will contain names of re- offenders. In many you will find the same names over and over again. At my Primary school the same boys were caned with great regularity- usually on the hands or backside, in front of the class- sometimes cowering in the corner while Mr Sharp beat them on any part of their body he could reach. At my Grammar school I was caned on 5 different occasions, over a period of 4 years. More than half the boys in my class were caned more than once. The more we were caned the more determined we were to break even more of the many irrational and irrelevant school rules. However, caning for me was a deterrent- it deterred me from hitting children and it deterred me from imposing arbitrary and irrational rules during my 22 years as a Headteacher.
