Cancel the legislation which allows fixed penalty fines.

Comment 15th March 2013

In order to encourage a fairer and more just society I would like to see fixed penatly notices made a thing of the past.

Why does this matter?

Currently fixed penalty notices are issued for an ever widening variety of minor offences. It is my view that these offences should be either dealth with by way of verbal warnings, written warnings or, if warranted, an appearence at court where all mitgiating circumstances can be put forward by the alleged offender or a not guilty please can be entered.

At present I know of those who have just paid their penalty because they didn't have the money or knowledge to launch an appeal against the fine. This means that the innocent are being criminalised unfairly – if a penalty is warranted then let a court decide what it should be!
