Deport foreign criminals upon sentencing

Comment 10th July 2010

If a foreign national commits a crime in this country and the conviction stipulates a prison sentence, they should be deported to their country of origin upon sentencing instead of being held in a British prison.

Why does this matter?

  • Keeping criminals in prison is a burden on the taxpayer
  • There are problems with prison overcrowding
  • The rehabilitative effects of prison are far from certain

One way to help address these issues is to deport foreign criminals upon sentencing. Deport them and declare them persona non grata in the UK for the duration of the sentence. Upon deportation, pass all details of their crime, (evidence, trial, sentence etc) to the authorities in their country of origin and if they judge the misdemeanours of their citizen to be serious enough to warrant a jail sentence, they can hold them in their prisons.
