Encourage the News to broadcast the News

Comment 8th July 2010

I don't care if Cheryl Cole is having an affair with the Yeti, or if there are rumours that Bill Clinton may be Obamas step-uncle. I also don't want to know if there is going to be a report on the lifecycle of the common toad released tomorrow that may shed light on possible wart outbreaks in the southern hemisphere. I do want to know what has actually happened and really does matter!

Why does this matter?

There seems to have been a move to both dumb down the news, and wash it with 'celebrity'. Most of the UK population is not dumb. Although the news is often not pleasant to watch, with stories about  War, Pestilence, Famine and Death, these stories really do make up the news. If we are to be informed about the world and expect to take an active role in helping out (after all we are still giving foreign aid while abandoning crucial services and building projects here) then we need to know about where the genuine need is. Lets leave the predictions and gossip to the tabloids and specialist shows, and let the news deliver what it does best; cutting edge stories from around the world, that might upset, but actually inform us about thing that we can do something about (Remember Ethiopia. That lead to Band Aid, Live Aid, and saved millions of lives).
