Freedom of Information Act

Comment 7th July 2010

Review the Freedom of Information legislation on the basis that it is used for the wrong reasons.

Local, regional and central government have not only had to set up teams to deal with the influx of FOI requests primarily driven by lazy journalism in the media but also for commercial businesses trying to get a foot in the door to find out who local suppliers are and spends by departments – which they could establish via procurement teams.  Also FOI requests between govt departments / civil service etc  – what's all that about!  Regional Assembly asking Local Authorities for info via FOI.

In principal sound legislation – used for completely the wrong purpose and creating misdirected workloads.  Tighten up the legislation to eliminate these types of request.

Why does this matter?

To reduce costs to public sector organisations and allow workers to concentrate on delivering services.
