Freedom of Information

Comment 5th July 2010

"Public" data obtained through expenditure of Taxpayer funds should be freely available via the Internet to Taxpayers.

Why does this matter?

Much documented data available through HMSO, Public Registries, etc. has to be purchased by the individual. This data has already been paid for by the taxpayer through taxation and should not be subject to further charge either directly or through third parties. The U.S.A. by contrast with the U.K. makes most of such data freely available to U.S. citizens via the Internet. The UK should follow suit. It is "our" data, "we" paid for it already, "we" should not have to pay for it again.
