Freedom of Speech

Comment 3rd July 2010

The full British freedom of speech should be restored, and only open to prosecution if someone is deliberately inciting violence, such as proclaiming “kill the Jews/Muslims/Infidels/Christians etc…

Why does this matter?

It is ridiculous that jokes cannot be made in public if they refer to race or religion. Everyone and everything should be able to be a subject for criticism, discussion, or humour – even bad humour. It’s good to be criticised or laughed at, it makes you examine yourself from another’s point of view. Restore “An Irishman, a Scotsman and a Jew …”, let us be able to laugh at God, Jesus, Buddah and Allah as well as Richard Dawkins. Let us be British again and not care if someone doesn’t appreciate our sense of humour. It’s been ours for a long time.
