Gifts for Churches Act 1811

Comment 21st July 2010

Repeal the Gifts for Churches Act 1811 (51 Geo. 3. c. 115) in full.

Why does this matter?

In a liberal and secular society, it is no longer right that monarchs and royals are entitled to hand over public land and public money to churches without any debate. The Act is discriminatory as it only applies to Christian buildings; and, in any case, I see no reason why churches (or any other religious buildings) should be exempt from the planning process that any other building has to go through, many of which (such as hospitals and schools) are in fact arguably more important to a modern community.
