Goldfish are not prizes!

Comment 24th July 2010

I am writing to you to complain about the way that goldfish are treated at funfairs across the country.

I am very annoyed that even though it is against the law for people under the age of 16 to win goldfish as a prize, they still can. I have been to numerous fun fairs and all of them have been giving prizes to unaccompanied children, some of which are only 11!

Thing is, the fish are not treated fairly when won. I have heard of many instances where people will throw the fish into the road or even leave it without water and watch it die. Also, children will bring home a fish and their parents will tell them that they do not want to keep it, be it about the responsibilities or the cost, and in the end, the fish gets killed. If anyone wanted a goldfish, they would go out to a pet shop and buy one.

Also, fish are not treated fairly at funfairs. I have just arrived back from a funfair called Howfen fest which is in my home town of Westhoughton, Bolton. I have attached an image from tonight to this email which shows dozens of little goldfish in a bucket; you may notice that the bucket is only 1/3 full with water, which means less room for the fish. I think that it is unfair that they are displayed to everyone in a bucket. But the thing that angers me the most is the fact that they are sometimes in plastic bags and hung up with the other prizes. Teddies and toys are hung up, and so is a plastic bag with a goldfish in it. They are being represented as toys! Fish are living things, not prizes.

I think a law should be passed so that goldfish are not given at funfairs whatsoever. I am sure that many people will agree that it is animal cruelty. It is the equivalent to given out cats and dogs as prizes, you would not do that would you? So why is it acceptable for a goldfish, who is less defenseless than a cat or a dog, to be given away – as though it does not matter what happens to it?

Please consider my views.

Why does this matter?

My idea is important because I feel that goldfish are being subjected to animal cruelty, not only by the fun fair but also by whoever wins them. It aggravates me to see living creatures be treated in this way. They get killed but no one seems to care.
