Joint tax returns for couples

Comment 11th July 2010

Married couples, civil partners and cohabiting couples should be able to submit joint tax returns instead of separate ones.

Why does this matter?

In a marriage, civil partnership or cohabitation, assets can be jointly owned. At the moment, each person has to submit their own tax return and this can lead to the need to make apportionments. Given the nature of the marital, cohabitin or civil partner relationship, it seems logical that couples should be able to submit combined tax returns.
