Life should mean life

Comment 1st July 2010

Life sentences should mean just that, life imprisonment with no chance of parole, e.g. for *all* murders and serious crimes. Judges should not have the leeway of shortening such sentences.

Why does this matter?

Any law worth its name must incorporate a sufficient degree of retribution and restorative justice. The idea that someone can deprive their victim of their life, only to come out of prison after a couple of decades (maybe even less) is grossly unfair. The perpetrator is able to enjoy a second start at life that he or she deprived their victim.
