Make identity checks meaningful

Comment 8th July 2010

Currently identity checks, usually carried out for the alleged purpose of controlling money laundering, are burdensome and ineffective.  Organisations who know a customer well ask for passport, driving licence, utility bills to prove they are who they say they are.  Pointless!

Money laundering controls should be aimed at the criminals not at the whole lawabiding population.

Why does this matter?

To reduce bureaucracy and pointless pettifogging controls.  To help people such as pensioners who may not have passports, driving licences or utility bills in their own names.  To help others who may not receive utility bills in their own names.  To reduce the blood pressure of everyone who encounters these irritants as they try to go about their legitimate, lawful business.
