Make it illegal for recruitment agents to advertise jobs that do not exist

How many times do you apply to an agent for a job advertised that day only to be told that the job

"is on hold"

"has been filled internally"!

or other such nonsense

Either the jobs exists or does not. If it exists and is advertised then it should be open and not be filled internally until exeternal candidates have been inerviewed.

Similarly jobs shoudl not be advertised and then "put on hold" and where such jobs are "put on hold" or withdrawn they should be imeditatley iwthdrawn form all websites.

Employers should be restriucted from offering jobs with no more than 3 agents.

Why does this matter?

It is important not to waste job seekers time for jobs that do not exist

It is important to protect job seekers from agents gatheriing job seekr detials and data for positions which do not exist.

It is important to stop emplyers advertising jobs with 10 agents and creating a nightmarefor the job seeker having to manager their applications and endure that the CV does not go to the same emploer more than once.

    I completly agree with this, recently I spent a good few hours applying for a job, literally two hours later I received an email stating the position had been filled although the job was still advertised on the company page. They didn’t even look at the application, I was very dissapointed as it was a waste of my time.
    I emailed the companies recruitment team stating that it is highly unethical for them to be advertising jobs that do not exist.. Further more I highlighted the fact that this kind of behaviour only results in a negative experience for the potential employers and bad public image.. This company is one that prides itself on ethical standards, sadly I now know this is not the case. This incident occurred over two weeks ago and I have not received a reply or an apollogy.

    I have had two interviews with Cap Gemini for jobs that did not exist. The reason I say the jobs did not exist was – The job was working for Cap Gemini on the Metropolitan Police account . No contract had been agreed or signed between Cap Gemini and the Metropolitan Police Force for the piece of work I was interviewed for. This was stated in the interview!

    I also agree with this statement. I am currently looking for employment and have had one agency contact me saying the job I applied for (through another agency site) I did not have enough qualifications for hmmmmm, but would I be interested in something else. Most of the time the “other” job includes sales, something I am never going to do again. I hate looking for jobs and am sure I probably apply for the same one more than once through different recruiters, because they describe them differently.

      Agencies also came back to me with ‘ they decided to go with an internal candidate’ or ‘ they decided to go with someone with more experience’ . I was nailed on for that role with bags of experience as I had done a similar role before. I only found out by contacting the agency, they wouldn’t have contacted me with feedback. I was also put forward by another agency for a role, had the interview then contacted the agency who told me that they had received feedback and that I was a strong candidate and that the company would have made me an offer there and then but had to finish off the interviews to be fair. Low and behold an internal candidate got the job even after the agency said I had virtually sealed the deal. The whole recruitment industry needs a shake up and regulating. It should be illegal to advertise jobs that do not exist as it is mis-representation and deception, in breech of section two of the fraud act 2006 as it is knowingly being done not by accident.

    I have had negative responses from agencies as well. I have been put forward for jobs by two separate agencies and kept chasing them for a reply for several weeks. I kept getting the same response ‘ I have sent the CV’s over and they are looking at them’ and ‘I am waiting for feedback from them’. I took it upon myself to call the companies directly and ask about the roles. One company said that the role I was put forward for didn’t exist in that office, the other company stated that they don’t deal with agencies. I have been lied too by agencies. I lost my grandad at the start of the year, then I left my old job as it is facing an uncertain future to start at a local firm. The work I was expected to carry out involved basically unethical practices, being a person of integrity I left and have been temping recently. I now find myself running out of money, in danger of losing my house all because I stood up for honesty and integrity by leaving a job role that was not quite straight, in my view most agencies catty on like this as well, they do not show any empathy or compassion for a persons circumstances, all their interested in is fulfilling KPI’s. I would ban all agencies and make the job center plus the main focal point for getting a job. You would have a profile online with them and apply for jobs, get JSA and they could have a dedicated contact center for job seekers to contact, make the process like joining the armed forces, you could go along to companies for open days, apply do it all through the job center.

    I applied for a job through an agency advertised as being in a town near where I live, I spent time amending my CV to suit the post described and a couple of hours writing a supporting statement, in the form of a covering letter. I sent this off to the agency and a couple of days later got a call back from a chap at the agency saying that my experience and qualifications etc. looked perfect for the role and asking if I could go into more detail regarding my previous experience, add this to my CV and send it to him in the next couple of days. At this point he did not/ would not tell me anymore about the job. I spent the next day updating my CV and going into more detail regarding experience, checking and double checking to make sure I got it right, then sent it off to the agency.
    Today I got a call back from the chap at the agency stating that he had two role that I would be perfect for, however one of them was now at the second interview stage! so he could not forward my details and the other one (the job I had actually applied for) was not in the town that it was advertised as being in, even though the advertisement specifically states “working out of the **** office”! The job is actually a further 20 miles away from where I live and to make it worse I had already applied for the job myself and been rejected.
    When I challenged the chap at the agency about the fact that the job was not where specifically stated, he said that the often put the name of other towns or areas to try to attract more people! Needless to say I was not amused and will not be applying for other jobs through that agency!

    Me and my girlfriend have both had bad experiences with job agencies,I personally think some of them haven’t got any jobs and are just collecting people’s details to sell on to the so called legitimate agencies,why do we need job agencies this country has been able to find people willing to work for years and years without the need of blood sucking so called job agencies,there just another way of making it harder for normal people who work to keep there heads above water to find work and then cream off the top of there wages while there sat in there warm offices, it’s a joke. WOT CAN BE DONE TO STOP THESE BASTARDS !!!!

    I agree entirely, job seekers should be protected from the wholly unethical practice of advertising jobs that do not exist and I have written to my MP about this, perhaps you should, too. Although I have had dealings with some very professional and genuine recruiters, unfortunately I have also had my time wasted through many suspect job ads. I have been contacted by many recruiters who are reluctant to provide details of the job they advertise and who often ask unrelated questions, such as “where have you been for interview recently? and what’s the name of the manager there?” etc. (it appears that these recruiters are looking for other openings and competing with other agencies for commission). In my opinion the law/regulations should be changed so that all advertised jobs must include basic details such as:

    location where the work is to be conducted
    job title and nature of work
    name of the prospective employer
    salary
    hours of work
    holidays
    other benefit details, pension etc

    I was looking for work near to home, but found it difficult to ascertain where the advertised jobs were located exactly.

    I’m a recruiter and a job seeker. From my experience rarely have I seen jobs get advertised for the sake of it as they are so expensive. It’s cheaper to sign up to a job board CV database than to post ‘fake’ jobs.

    However 9 times out of 10 it is down to companies asking for candidates for a job thats in the pipeline and waiting signoff so theybask agent for help.

    With so much competition the chances are the agent advertised to catch the “low hanging fruit” before their competitors do. The amount of times we get asked for help and told its a requirment only to find out that the manager was pricing up a potential project or has someone else in mind but needs to legally advertise so that they can officially hire direct.

    I have also interviewed at companies where I was told it was a done deal only to then be told they hired internally. This was a surprise as they apparently been looking for months but discounted me for having too much experience. It was a total waste of time, but truth of the matter is people don’t always know what they want and have good intentions. It’s only afterwards that they realise they can make do having taken the time to look at alternatives.

    The other reason you believe its recruiters at fault is the very reason that they are the middleman and messenger. Usually agents get candidates complaining over issues that arise from the client. Clients complainfrom issues arising from candidate. Candidates want more money and flexibility or chance to develop new team and work with new tools. Client usually wants a Unicorn – everything within one person which usually doesn’t exist, ie all current skill set, plus more and flexible, local and cheap.

    No one complains when things work out but I have found in the last 14 years of recruiting IT professionals and working with businesses of all sizes, that 95% of the time is wasted on the impossible. The industry does need changing, my view is that the ‘sales’ aspect needs to be removed from recruitment.

    I have had a lot of success in my career, but sadly these days I find that unless you are ‘driven’ and money motivated’ with a willingness to work all hours, you will struggle due to the amount of competition out there. Hence after 13 years I want out of recruitment but sadly its the only calls I get because its a ‘Sales’ role. I enjoy helping others but I’m no longer money motivated so it would seem that I too am stuck with a load of various useful skills but as I don’t tick a Unicorn box I am constantly overlooked. I personally think the change needs to be the goverment offering support to career changers, in terms of financial support and training and incentivising businesses to look outside the box and give others a chance. Companies should be able to list what they struggle with and then give people the opportunity to help instead of chasing for their competitions staff or looking for someone that doesnt exist. Their should also be just one goverment sponsored job board where the adverts have to legally state the end hiring company. The only reason companies names ate removed is due to contacts not wanting to be approached directly or because agencies dont want to give up their clients names as competitors might call them. If the industry was more open and candidates knew which company they could avoid applying multiple times. If companies were only allowed to use that single job board database and candidates were tagged to the role so all agents can see the history. It would avoid so much hassle. It would then be down to screening and data management. With everything out and on the table their would be leas chance of mess ups, missed candidates and double ups. This would save everyones time and save a lot of frustration. Obviously there is more to it but as this is already long I will leave it there. Its not the recruiters fault, its the industries as its not adapted to work with the new world of technology. When it does, everyone will be happier and the goverment will be able to see a true represenatation of what skills are out there and what is really needed. Community recruitment on a national level.
