Mark All Bridge Heights in Metres

1 Comment 15th July 2010

Make it a legal requirement for all bridges to be marked in Metres….contentious I know and I speak as an arch-Eurosceptic. Currently some bridges are marked in feet and inches, others in metres and some in both. There is no consistency. The result is bridge strikes.

It should alos be a requirement for a driver to know his vehicle height IN METRES

Alternatively it could be made a legal requirement for all bridges to be marked in both imperial and metric

Why does this matter?

Bridge strikes cause big problems to both rail and road.

You will always get the unattentive driver but bridge heights are largely only applicable to lorry drivers. All trucks are designed and built in metres, not in feet and inches. It is simply for practicability that I say mark heights in metres.

Make it a legal requirement for all drivers to know their vehicle height in metres and for it to be marked on the vehicle/trailer in metres.

Without this measure you will get companies like TESCO who mark the height of their trailers in feet and inches whilst the towing vehicles fifth wheel heigh is marked as say, 1.38 metres. RESULT: Confusion in the mind of the driver or at least the opportunity to mess up big time.

This is complete madness…..Do something about it.
