Mobile Speed Cameras

Comment 1st July 2010

I would remove laws allowing authorities to run MOBILE speed cameras.

Why does this matter?

Static speed cameras promote safer driving around dangerous areas on roads, such as blind or tight bends, 30 MPH zones and outside schools etc. Drivers are aware that there is a permanent camera and therefore are more aware of their speed in areas of the highway where this is important

Mobile speed cameras do not promote safety – In fact I have witnessed an accident where a mobile speed camera caused an accident as a driver who was not driving dangerously or excessively fast , panicked and braked too heavily, losing control of their vehicle.

Mobile cameras are often placed not in risk areas but in areas chosen SPECIFICALLY to catch drivers unaware (such as just within 30 MPH zones as drivers are slowing down) and these are OFTEN areas where it is NOT important or particularly dangerous for a driver to be slightly over the limit.
