parents freedom to exclude their children from sex education

Comment 2nd July 2010

Parents should be free to know exactly what is to be taught their children in sex education lessons and to have the freedom to remove their children from these lessons if they are unhappy about what is to be taught

Why does this matter?

Parents are the legal guardians of their children's health and welfare. Much emphasis is rightly placed on the physical safety of children, but their moral and spiritual health are equally important. Parents' values and guidance should not be undermined by the state.

There is little evidence that giving children information they cannot handle does anything to improve their lives in the widest sense, certainly sex education has not helped to reduce children's sexual activity. Thousand of young lives are irrevocably damaged by early pregnancy and abortion, and by STI's which can blight their fertility in their more responsible years. Young people so damaged can find it difficult to form lasting relationships in later life, perpetuating the breakdown in family stability.
