Parish Council bureaucracy

Comment 2nd July 2010

Simplify the workings, responsibilities and appointment of Parish Councils

Why does this matter?

The rules and duties of Parish Councils need to be reviewed to encourage involvement in communities. Parish Councils are now obliged to follow bureaucratic rules often out of all proportion to their budget and officers are conscious of personal liability. What once was about voluntary support for the local community has become a quasi-professional role with increased costs and excessive audit/scrutiny requirements. This is not what a community is about – it's about trust and working together.
