Reduce Alcohol and Tobacco Levy

Comment 31st July 2010

Reduce the duties paid on alcohol and tobacco to the same levels as France.

Why does this matter?

At the moment about a quarter of all cigarettes smoked in the UK are purchased in Europe.  A similar figure applies for alcohol drunk at home.

The tax on these purchases goes largely to the French and Belgian governments.  This must be costing the Treasury billions in lost revenue.  If the duty was reduced to comparable levels there would be no need for people to buy abroad.

The tax take on each purchase would be less but with more tobacco and alcohol being bought here I think the Treasury would end up with more money.

It would also reduce the demand for smuggled goods and free up customs officers to look for drugs and firearms rather than  tobacco and alcohol.
