Reduce staffing levels at the M.O.D.

Comment 20th August 2010

The idea is to reduce the number of staff at the M.O.D. by at least thirty percent.

Why does this matter?

This is important because the fact that some 247,000 members of the armed are "supported" by around 84,000 "back office" staff is surely overkill. This ratio of 1:3 is unsupportable and is probably a demotivator for the servicepeople actually doing the job. Both the Americans and, closer to home, the French accomplish the same task with many fewer staff. Combined with a similar cull of the top four ranks in each service this will produce a slimmer and more efficient department. The savings might even help alleviate some of the shortfalls in equipment.
