Reform Air Passenger Duty

Comment 31st July 2010

Remove air passenger duty from international flights to the EU and other countries and retain them for cheaper domestic flights.

Replace air passenger duty with an Airplane Tax within Britain. If the plane if full no tax is paid. If it is 90% full then a 10% tax is paid by the airline. There should a reverse rolling scale.

For 80% full, 20% tax is paid.

For 20% full, 80% tax is paid.

For an empty plane bar  the crew – 100% tax is paid.

Why does this matter?

It will encourage airlines to fill planes up for both routes of a journey and will not hit the ordinary passenger.

It is at the moment a poll tax for holidaymakers. Get rid of this stealth (plane) tax!
