Remove criminal records when spent
A criminal record is now kept on Police files for 100 years. We should remove a criminal record after 5 years once it is spent, and after 2 years for younger people under the age of 24 for all but very serious offences.
Why does this matter?
Many people cannot get jobs because their records are kept on Police file permanently. They do not get a chance to redeem themselves and there is often no incentive, especially for young people, to turn their back on crime. This is not good for our Society and is wholly wrong. Many people do things when they are young that they would never do when they are older and it is wrong to punish people forever, especially where the crime has not been a serious one.
