Remove L8 – “Legionnaires Disease, the control of legionella bacteria in water systems”

Comment 9th August 2010

This code of practice requires organisations to show they are taking action against Legionnaires disease that is at least as effective as the measures set out. In my organisation an office building for 1200 workers on usual office hours has been required to have its toilet systems flushing all day, including nights and weekends when the premises are vacant. This has meant that we have not only missed our targets for reducing water consumption, but, I gather, increased consumption on the previous year.

Why does this matter?

Is the very, very small risk of Legionnaire's disease worth the vast quantities of water involved in applications such as these?
