Repeal all Lord of Manor powers

Comment 6th July 2010

Ancient Lord of the Manor titles can be purchased by anyone which occasionally have certain rights connected to them, these rights are often used by the title holder to hold residents and traders to ransom.  The case of a John Perry who purchased the Lord of the Manor title for Thaxted for £10,000 in around 2006 resulted in an argument with market traders who news media reported he was going to charge rent and threatened to evict others who refused his demands.

Why does this matter?

In a fair and democratic Britain nobody should be able to purchase titles that allows them to bully, intimidate or undermine the rights of the people living in their own communities.  A law is required to abolish all remaining powers that the Lord of Manor titles still provide to their owners.
