Repeal law that allows companies to set up continous payment authority

Comment 15th July 2010

Repeal law that allows companies to set up continous payment authority and make all payments made by debit / credit cards only direct debits.

Why does this matter?

When using debit & credit cards companies (especially insurance companies) can set up continous payment authority payments (aka recurring payments).

These are not covered by the direct debit guarentee scheme and require the company taking the payment to ask the bank to stop the payment.

The card owner cannot ask the bank to cancel the payment, like you can with direct debit, nor are the banks liable if the payment continues to be paid.
