Repeal Mental Health Act (2007)

Return to the 2003 mental health act for now

Why does this idea matter?

Community Treatment Orders infringe patient autonomy. If patients are ill enough to warrant forced treatment or coercion into treatment in the community then maybe they are not well enough to be out of hospital. CTOs also turn medical/nursing staff into society’s agents of control rather than professionals who patients seek help from.

Personality disorders can be treated sometimes, but seeking to use medical/psychological methods to force treatment on untreatable dangerous PDs is again using medicine as a method of societal control – use an adapted criminal justice method if you like, but doctors and psychologists should not be prison guards.
