Repeal the overtaking on the left motoring law

2 Comments 25th July 2010

Currently is is an offence to overtake on the left. This law is illogical.

If you can be overtaken on the left then you are in the wrong position / speed on the road. The fault is yours not the overtaker.

The argument against this on road safety grounds is without merit. It has been legal in North America (mirror image) for generations without mishap.

Why does this matter?

This would make an enormous impact on the capacity of roads especially on motorways where slow lane blockers hold up traffic.

  1. Phil Beaumont says:

It is NOT an offence to overtake on the left. The Highway code advises against it, but it is not a statutory offence.

  2. NJbeckett says:

It is not and never has been illegal to overtake on the left on the motorway. You can’t make something legal that isn’t illegal.
