Independent schools should not have to further demonstrate why they should retain charitable status
Why does this idea matter?
Removing some independent schools by making them more expensive, by removing their charitable status, will make them more exclusive and socially divisive, as they will only be available to more wealthy parents.
Government policy should should in the direction of encouraging more independent schools with charitable status, as this will make them more accessible to those on lower incomes. Furthermore this will take financial pressure off the state education sector in times when public expenditure needs to be cut. It will also drive up educational standards by providing a bigger competitive alternative to the state sector. This approach WILL work. One only has to remember the parlous service provided by the telecommunications sector in the Uk when it was a state monopoly
