Requirement for permission from the Home Office to marry a non-EU citizen

Comment 27th July 2010

Repeal the requirement to obtain 'permission to marry' from the Home Office if you are marrying a non-EU national.

Why does this matter?

This is an infringement of civil liberties (ruled illegal by ECHR), has no relevance to immigration control (there are still multiple hoops to jump through to get definite and the indefinite leave to remain during), is just a money-spinner (costs £100s to obtain permission even if one partner is a UK tax-payer), and leads to absurdities (2 Australian nationals temporarily in the UK, with no intention of staying in the UK, having to get permission to marry each other in the UK or incur the cost of returning to Australia to get married).
