Restore the public interest defence for whistleblowers

Comment 5th July 2010

Restore the public interest defence for whistleblowers that was in the Official Secrets Act 1911 but removed in the Official Secrets Act 1989.

Why does this matter?

As the law currently stands public employees can face up to two years in jail or an unlimited fine for revealing government misconduct. Restoring the public interest defence will protect state employees if the information they reveal about government wrongdoing is in the wider public interest.
