Restrict the prescription of psychotropic drugs

Comment 8th July 2010

That no GP should be allowed to prescribe psychotropic drugs, including anti-depressants, without first referring the patient for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Why does this matter?

Over-prescription and medication for mental distress is becoming a huge problem in the UK.  Due to a lack of resources provided for talking therapies, specifically Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, a chemical cosh is being applied to ordinary people suffering general stresses and the highs and lows of life.  The creates a dependent culture, where people are struggling to recover from the side effects of drugs that prove ineffective in the long-term and suffering from terrible and distressing side effects when they attempt to withdraw from such drugs.
