Road Tax & Uninsured drivers

Comment 9th July 2010

In some countries, notably Australia, the Vehicle Duty includes a component for a compulsory third party insurance. This means that all taxed vehicles are automatically covered for third party liability, and that comprensive insurance cover is not legally required.

The advantage of this system is;

– the system to control /sieze untaxed vehicles is established

– the expensive IT projects integrating the insurance industry databases with VOSA and the DVLA can be binned. These departments could be streamlined

– compulsory premiums will drop hugely because we wont be subsiding losses to uninsured drivers

Naturally this will be opposed by the vested interests in the insurance industry, but the coalition government needs to decide where it's loyalty lies

Why does this matter?

There is a huge problem with uninsured drivers in this country
