Road traffic law stops firefighters checking hydrants

Comment 1st July 2010

Since the change in the Road traffic act firefighters have not been able to check fire hydrants as they have done for many years. They can only use hydrants in the case of an emergancy.   The Law should be changed to enable firefighters to check the hydrants as a matter of routine.

Why does this matter?

This means that firefighter do not know if the hydrant will work when it is needed this puts the public and firefighters at greater risk in the event of a fire.  The checking of hydrants also provides firefighter an excellent way of improving their knowledge of the area.
