Scrap jail sentence for death by careless driving

1 Comment 2nd July 2010

Reduce the maximum sentence for death by careless driving from a jail sentence to something more meaningful and less wasteful.

Why does this matter?

The idea of locking up someone who has killed through careless (rather than dangerous) driving is asinine.  By the very fact that they were careless means that they had no forethought and probably could not have helped their actions at that moment.  Will a jail sentence change their actions in the future?  The act of killing someone by mistake is far more powerful a punishment that will stay with them forever.  This is a waste of a prison cell.

One Response to Scrap jail sentence for death by careless driving

  1. G.Squire. says:

The problem is that the penalty system is not enforced fairly. e.g. a single parent drink driver with 2 children who killed by careless driving received a long prison sentence but a drug-drive woman with one child who killed a 20-year-old man by dangerous driving walked free from court ”because she had a child’.

Those who kill while driving recklessly to escape from the police should have a long custodial and gender-neutral sentence.

To kill someone by drink or drug driving or reckless speeding is a very serious offence and deserves a long custodial sentence.
