Scrap Law on Daily Religious Worship in Schools

Comment 2nd July 2010

Scrap the current law that requires all schools to hold an act of (broadly Christian) worship every day.

Why does this matter?

It forces young people to pray or worship in ways which may be contrary to their own belief or lack of belief.

It does not recognise the right of children and young people to freeedom of religion or belief or freedom from religion or belief.

It does not recognise either the plurality of belief or the existence non-belief in the UK today.

The system for parents to opt their children out is flawed.

Children under 16 cannot opt themselves out.

Inclusive, non-sectarian assemblies are a better alternative and would aid community development and cohesion.
