Currently DEFRA, The Food Standards Agency and various Port Health Agencies control the free movement of foodstuffs. All these regimes overlap, but very rarely liaise.
The whole lot should be brought under one central government office. There would be tremendous savings in documentation and salaries. Also the logistics of food distribution would become sensible again, which would also provide massive savings for consumers.
Why does this idea matter?
We are all going to tighten our belts, therefore anything that will decrease retail costs to consumers is worth following up.
