Taxation and Representation (Comment)

Comment 10th August 2010

It should be borne in mind that, by definition, expatriates are resident abroad and therefore may not have ready access to this site. This might explain an apparent lack of interest in the subject from UK residents. Were they aware of the site and able to respond I am sure that there would be significant support for my proposal.

Why does this matter?

It is important because those who pay UK tax should have an inalienable right — for as long as they continue to pay UK tax on all or part of their income —  to participate in General Elections that will decide the future government, since the government that is elected will set the levels of pensions and tax payable.

Without representation, expatriates have no means of making thier views known to those who decide their pension and tax levels. This situation breaches their democratic rights and civil liberty.
