taxpayers to be able to show how they want their tax spent

Comment 6th July 2010

Given that almost all taxpayers are obliged to make tax returns every year it would be a good idea to have a section on this form allowing the taxpayer to indicate (on a percentage basis) how they want their tax spent.

For example, some people may want more money spent on education, others more on health etc.

I don't propose making this binding for the government but it would provide usefull information on the mood of the public. If it is published every year and then tracked to see how it diverges from government spending plans it would be useful.

Why does this matter?

giving the populace (or a large percentage of them) the belief that their views are being heard.
