The right to use force to defend personal property

Comment 5th July 2010

Enact a law allowing a person to use force to defend his or her own personal possessions.

This should be the right of every citizen of the United Kingdom.

Why does this matter?

The law presently gives a right to defend one's person, but there is no right to use force to defend one's property.  If an old lady were to beat a thief over the head with her umbrella as he tried to snatch her handbag, she would be guilty of assault.  There is presently NO legal right to use force to defend your property rather than your person.  If somebody tries to steal your wallet, you had better let him get away rather than use force to stop him, or you will be guilty of an offence.
