Towbar type approval

Comment 8th July 2010

The EU imposed legislation requiring towbars to be approved (EC/94/20) is preventing safe use of a number of low volume towbars made in the UK for 4×4 vehicles.  These are rated for recovery and far exceed the requirements of type approval, but the cost of the approval is prohibitive for these small manufacturers.

This legislation should be repealed or modified to allow an exemption for special purpose tow hitches designed for recovery purposes.

Why does this matter?

This idea is important because it is restricting a number of small businesses from selling a product which has proven perfectly safe in use on vehicles not covered by the new legislation.
