Unnecessary costs of regulations

Comment 5th July 2010

Ensure that any regulations required by law are available to business free of charge.

Why does this matter?

Many laws require that work is carried out to published standards such as British Standards for fire alarms and Electrical work. These Standards are charged items from British Standards and cost a pretty penny. (£75 for the wiring regs).

This incurs an unnecessary cost on business as they have to purchase those standards often to find that they already comply or that the Standards do not apply. It simply does not make sense to make a legal requirement and then allow a third party to charge people to see what that legal requirement is.

This used to be the case with the quasi-legal HSE Approved codes of practice but the HSE eventually made them available for free download. It is time this practice was extended to all legal requirements for business.
