On the  5th May 2009 Jacqui Smith the then Home Secretary banned Savage from the
UK saying "If you can't live by the rules that we live by, the standards and the values that we live by, we should exclude you from this country ".I value free speech (a value which Smith
perhaps does not).I don't believe in Savages ideas but I believe he has the right to say them
and even more important those beliefs must be robustly examined:something which this ban
fails to do as Savage cannot attend public debates in this country.

Why is this idea important?

In a robust democray we must not be afraid in examing and dicussing views which we
may find reprehensible:the ban on savage is a cop out,it is simply like burying your head
in the sand and hopeing that the nasty man goes away:Savage's views must be robustly
discussed. On a civil liberty view the ban is also bad-Savage in his early years collected
plants in fiji-a collection of which is in Kew Gardens, and which he now cannot visit.
Bans like this tend to be counter productive-the UK used to value free speech, and it is
now time to show to the world that we still do.

  1. totally agree. By not allowing him in we are saying that we are scared of conservative views.
